Velvet buck, always bigger in velvet.

Camouflage background.

Snow in background can make it tough.

Nice heavy buck.

Another back view.

Looking at the buck from behind. Never judge

Look at the ears.

Now if you know this buck, no problem.

A wide typical
The funniest thing we hear the most during pre-scouting or during the hunting season is;
"I seen a 30 incher!" or "That buck I seen was at least 36" or the best of all "One was pushing 40" wide"
Truth is, the chances of even seeing one 30 incher, during any period of time, is very rare, or not at all.

David Long mentions the "The 6% Rule" in his book "Public Land Mulies". Only about 6% of the bucks harvested in the west meet or exceed 30".  On the Kaibab in Arizona, antler data was collected from 8,781 deer harvested between 1936 & 1951, only 6.3% reached or exceeded this mark. In Wyoming, same data was collecting on the largest mule deer herd, Wyoming Range Deer Herd, and out of 1,686 deer harvested between 1989 and 2001, only 4.8% made the 30" mark. This is an average of 5.5% out of two premiere areas.

"If a 30-inch buck is what you have your sights set on, more often than not, there is a good chance that you will be going home without punching your deer tag"-David Long

If you would like to read a great book on hunting mule deer or getting good tips, plan purchasing David Long's "Public Land Mulies, The Bottom Line". You can find it through Eastman's Hunting Journal or www.eastmans.com.

Here are some photos of deer in the field, guess what you think (Be honest!!), then click on photo to see the result.
Each measurement is figured by 20" ear spread, which the average for a mule deer is 18-22". Always figure within 1" or 2".
